Prevention First is the Partnership for a Drug-Free America’s affiliate in Illinois. We are a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Founded in 1980, we also address problems related to drug use such as teen pregnancy, violence and HIV/AIDS. Families, professionals and communities rely on Prevention First for resources and information that supports prevention and promotes healthy lifestyles.

Our library has branches in Springfield and Chicago, or we’ll ship to your door, anywhere in Illinois. We have books, research resources, journals, videos and other materials that address personal and professional development needs. Check out our online catalog!

Educational conferences 
Prevention professionals, health care practitioners and educators receive continuing education credits and stay informed about the most up-to-date prevention practices at our annual prevention conference, and at our Stronger Roots, Stronger Branches conference designed to educate and foster dialogue among professionals serving multicultural communities.

Be Real is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide Illinois schools with a program that infuses drug prevention messages into lesson plans that meet Illinois State Learning Standards. A parent guide, drug-free pledge cards and wristbands add to the program’s outreach.

Coalitions Link
Prevention work is often forwarded best through coalitions. Prevention First is a leader in organizing and facilitating coalitions that serve communities. Most notable among them is the Latino Coalition for Prevention, involving hundreds of Illinois professionals and community leaders providing culturally appropriate prevention programs and materials.
