Illinois Youth Survey Provides Key Data
Understanding the problem of youth substance use is the first step to preventing it. The Illinois Youth Survey (IYS)
fosters such understanding.
Administered by schools across the state every other spring, the IYS asks students in 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades
a variety of questions about substance use and related issues, such as violence.
All participating schools receive a report of their results. The reports are confidential, however educators are
encourage to share their results with community members.
Results from a sample of schools are used to create a statewide report that focuses on substance use rates,
key risk and protective factor rates, and the rates of some problem behaviors related to substance use.
On the Illinois Youth Survey Web site, www.illinoisyouthsurvey.org,
you may view the statewide report as well as basic use and risk figures for any county with at least two schools
participating in the survey.
Results from the 2004 survey are currently posted.
Results from the 2006 survey will be added at the end of this year.
